Shopify vs WooCommerce for Chennai Retailers: Costs, Control and Maintenance

Published: Updated:

Choose Shopify when a hosted commerce platform fits your requirements and you prefer less direct infrastructure management. Consider WooCommerce when WordPress integration, hosting choice and deeper implementation control matter—and you have dependable technical support. For Chennai retailers, the better fit depends on catalogue, payments, shipping, maintenance and total cost rather than the platform name.

This is a research-based platform comparison, not a hands-on performance test. Prices below were checked against official sources on 4 October 2026. Developer fees, gateway charges, taxes and optional integrations require separate confirmation. The scenarios are illustrative, not Digiman client results.

Shopify vs WooCommerce India: choose by use case

Requirement Shopify fit to examine WooCommerce fit to examine Decision check
Hosted store with limited internal technical capacity Hosting is included in the platform subscription Hosting and maintenance need an owner or managed provider Who resolves technical problems?
Existing WordPress content website Assess migration or separate-store coordination Commerce operates within WordPress Which existing content and integrations must remain?
Custom operational workflow Verify plan, app and API capabilities for the exact requirement Assess extension or custom-development feasibility Can the developer demonstrate the workflow?
Standard catalogue and checkout Evaluate the selected plan and theme against real products Evaluate the selected hosting, theme and extensions Can staff manage the catalogue reliably?
Control over hosting and application code Work within the hosted platform’s supported customization boundaries Greater direct choice, with associated responsibility Is the extra control useful and supportable?

These are conditional recommendations. A hosted platform still needs configuration, asset management and operational testing. An open-source platform is not automatically inexpensive once implementation and ongoing support are included.

Side-by-side platform comparison

Dimension Shopify WooCommerce
Core model Subscription commerce platform Free open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress
Hosting Included with the online-store platform Chosen and funded separately or through a managed service
Extensions Apps and plan features; inspect recurring and usage charges Plugins and extensions; inspect licences, renewals and compatibility
Customization Supported theme, app and platform interfaces with plan-dependent limits WordPress and commerce customization subject to technical feasibility
Maintenance Platform infrastructure is managed; store configuration and integrations still need attention Hosting, updates, backups and plugin compatibility require assigned responsibility
Payment costs Confirm processor fees and applicable platform third-party transaction fees Confirm processor fees and any payment-extension costs
Migration Map existing data and functionality to supported import or integration methods Map existing data and functionality to the chosen WordPress stack

Neither column proves that a store will load faster, rank better or convert more. Those outcomes depend on the implementation, assets, customer experience and operating conditions. Ask for evidence relevant to your proposed build.

Current platform prices: separate billing choices

The Shopify India pricing page, reviewed 4 October 2026, showed the following standard prices. The annual-billing figures are monthly equivalents, not a statement that the annual commitment is paid month by month. Check current checkout terms, taxes and eligibility before purchasing.

Plan Pay monthly Monthly equivalent with annual billing Listed third-party provider fee
Basic ₹1,994 ₹1,499 2%
Grow ₹7,447 ₹5,599 1%
Advanced ₹30,164 ₹22,680 0.6%

These figures exclude separately priced development, apps and other costs unless explicitly included. Third-party provider fees must be assessed under the applicable payment rules; do not apply a rate indiscriminately to every payment method. Promotional trial prices are not used as the ongoing cost baseline here.

WooCommerce’s official pricing page states that the core platform is free, with no monthly platform subscription or revenue share. Hosting, extensions and payment processing remain costs to evaluate. Its international examples are not Chennai quotations and should not be converted into a supposed local market average.

First-year ecommerce costs: compare complete scope

Ask both developers to price the same catalogue, workflows and launch requirements. A platform subscription and a website-development quote purchase different things. Separate one-off work from recurring charges.

Cost component Shopify quote should clarify WooCommerce quote should clarify
Platform and hosting Plan, billing commitment and included hosting Hosting specification, renewal and management
Domain and theme Registration or renewal, theme choice and licence Registration or renewal, theme choice and licence
Development Design, configuration, customization and testing Design, configuration, customization and testing
Apps or extensions Subscriptions, usage charges and required plan dependencies Licences, renewals and compatibility maintenance
Payments Gateway charges and applicable platform transaction fees Gateway charges and any integration fees
Operations Shipping integration, messaging, inventory and staff training Shipping integration, messaging, inventory and staff training
Maintenance Store support, integration checks and approved changes Updates, backups, hosting support and approved changes

Planning formula: first-year cost = initial development + platform or hosting charges + domain/theme costs + apps/extensions + support + relevant transaction and operating charges + applicable taxes. Avoid double-counting bundled components.

For example, Shopify Basic’s listed annual-billing equivalent of ₹1,499 × 12 equals ₹17,988 for the subscription baseline. That calculation is not the total cost of launching or running a store. A WooCommerce comparison also needs actual hosting, extension and support quotes; ₹0 for the core software does not establish a lower complete cost.

Payments and shipping for Indian retailers

Identify required payment methods before choosing the platform. Ask the selected gateway to confirm merchant eligibility, onboarding, supported methods, settlement, refunds and charges for your business. A platform integration does not guarantee that every merchant can activate every payment product.

Shopify’s third-party provider documentation is the starting point for evaluating an external payment setup. Verify the applicable platform fee separately from the payment provider’s processing charge. Do not assume a feature shown in global marketing is available under your Indian merchant configuration.

For either platform, require a payment test plan that covers success, failure and refunds where supported. Decide whether cash on delivery is offered and how its handling, reconciliation and returns affect the workflow. Confirm those details with the actual provider rather than treating COD as costless.

For shipping, specify delivery locations, product weights and dimensions, packaging, pickup and return processes. A Chennai retailer delivering locally and shipping nationally may need different rules. Ask the developer to demonstrate the chosen courier integration and address unsupported pincodes, tracking updates and exceptions.

Catalogue, inventory and integrations

Bring representative products to the platform discussion: a simple product, a product with variants, a discounted item and any bundle or customized item. Ask the team to demonstrate editing, stock updates and order handling using those examples.

Do not choose from a claim that a platform supports “unlimited products” alone. Real performance and staff usability depend on product data, images, filtering, integrations and the chosen implementation. Verify current limits relevant to your exact product options rather than assuming every variation structure fits.

If the physical shop and online store share inventory, identify the source of truth. Document what happens when a sale occurs offline, an order is cancelled or stock changes. A connector name is not evidence that synchronization handles your real exceptions.

List essential integrations separately from optional ones: accounting, inventory, messaging, shipping, analytics or customer management. Ask who owns credentials, pays renewals and handles failures. A proof of the required workflow is more useful than an app-count comparison.

Maintenance responsibility and control

Shopify: hosted infrastructure with store responsibilities

A hosted platform reduces direct server-management work, but the merchant still needs accurate products, working integrations and a reviewed customer journey. Theme changes and apps can introduce operational issues. Name who tests important changes and who provides support beyond platform-level assistance.

WooCommerce: flexibility with an assigned maintenance owner

A WooCommerce build needs a clear plan for hosting, backups, software updates, security and compatibility checks. Managed services can take on parts of that responsibility, but confirm what the agreement includes. Avoid a handover where nobody knows who restores the store after a problem.

Our WordPress development guide provides agency context. Use the written proposal to confirm actual implementation, maintenance and access responsibilities.

Migration: assess what transfers before committing

Inventory existing products, categories, media, customers, orders, content and integrations. Identify what can transfer through supported methods, what needs transformation and what must be rebuilt. Do not assume passwords, app data or custom checkout behaviour will transfer unchanged.

Prepare a URL map for pages whose addresses change and plan appropriate redirects where possible. Check product details, stock, payment routes and order handling before launch. Record a cutover plan that accounts for orders and inventory changing during migration.

A migration budget should include validation and operational training. Moving data is only part of moving a working store. Ask for a trial import and examples of records that cannot transfer cleanly before accepting a final estimate.

Decision checklist before commissioning the store

  1. Document catalogue examples, customer journeys and operational requirements.
  2. Confirm gateway eligibility and complete payment costs.
  3. Demonstrate shipping and inventory workflows.
  4. Separate native features from apps, extensions and custom work.
  5. Compare first-year and renewal costs using matching scope.
  6. Assign maintenance, backups and incident-response responsibility.
  7. Agree merchant access, licences and handover documentation.
  8. Map migration requirements and validate representative data.
  9. Test the mobile shopping and checkout journey.
  10. Choose the platform whose trade-offs your team can sustain.

Questions retailers often ask

Is WooCommerce always cheaper than Shopify?

No. Free core software does not remove hosting, development, extensions and support costs. Conversely, Shopify’s subscription is not the complete store budget. Compare the same requirements over the same period.

Which platform is better for SEO?

Neither platform name guarantees rankings. Evaluate useful content, accessible navigation, page implementation and control over the changes your store needs. Ask the developer to explain the actual implementation rather than promise a platform-based ranking advantage.

Can I change platforms later?

A migration may be possible, but effort depends on data, integrations and custom features. Plan access and exports from the beginning and investigate what will not transfer automatically.

Does a small Chennai retailer need custom development?

Only where the requirements justify it. A suitable standard configuration may cover the workflow. Ask the developer to distinguish essential custom work from optional enhancements and price both clearly.
